Do you want to modernize The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind without relying on an outdated compilation of mods? Keep scrolling!
From time to time, we can’t help but get back to the good’ol games that used to entertain us decades ago. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind makes no exception, but it can really suffer from the test of time if not aided with some specific mods out there.
To ensure the best quality and compatibility, we are not going to use MGSO aka “Morrowind Overhual – Sound and Graphics” given how outdated it is (dates back to 2012). Instead, we are going with a less automated approach by manualing selecting the mods we need. For this purpose, we’ll start off with:
A modular list of the most up-to-date mods aimed at modernizing the whole game, easily accessible by beginners and veterans alike. Be sure to read everything carefully as it explains in detail how to install each and which mod.
But since we are going to install Rebirth afterwards, it is crucial that we skip some conflicting mods under the following categories:
Skip everything except ‘Illy’s Solsteim Rumour Fix’
Skip all of them
Skip ‘Unique Finery Replacer UFR’
Skip ‘Correct Iron Warhammer’
2.J Flora & Landscape
Skip everything except Apels Ascadian Isles Retex, Apel’s Asura Coast and Sheogorath Region Retexture, Caverns Bump mapped, Landscape Retexture and Plant life retexture.
*Don’t worry, we are going to install some fine grass for Rebirth later*
2.L Optional Gameplay Changes
Skip all of them except Join all Houses, Join all Vampire Clans, Health and Magicka Regen and Graphical Herbalism.
2.M Worldspace Edits
Skip everything except ‘Distant Mournhold’
Soon as you are done installing everything you need, we proceed to the core mod of our modernizing journey:
Rebirth overhauls cities, landascapes and interiors in a lore-friendly way, making them busy and interesting to explore. It also fixes countless major and minor problems of vanilla Morrowind and attempts to balance many aspects of the game.
If you’d like to have quality grass in your game, install Grass for Morrowind Rebirth, despite being made for 4.4.3 it is perfectly compatible with the latest version (4.5 as of today).
Probably one of the oldest and biggest mods still worked on as of today. Tamriel Rebuilt expands the whole Morrowind experience outside the border of Vvanderfell, by letting you explore the whole peninsula.
It is crucial that we don’t skip one specific step in the readme: iii. Registering Game BSA, which is needed to load the game assets correctly.
Let’s do it together, simply navigate to your Morrowind Directory and open the Morrowind.ini with any text editor, search for the [Archives] section and you should see a list of registered game archives from the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions. Add the following lines below the list of archives:
And that’s it for Modernizing Morrowind! Feel free to add any other mod you’d like that won’t conflict with Rebirth though.
Now go back to Vvanderfell and be sure tell every outlander about the Healing Muffin.
